Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has been part of the telecom landscape for over a decade. Skype now has well over 100 million log ins globally every month; however, VoIP is only now becoming a factor in mobile voice communications.
Whilst mobile VoIP is in its infancy, the 'Over the Top' (OTT) VoIP providers are emerging onto mobile operator competitive radars with high quality services. These services threaten the voice revenues that remain key to mobile operator profitability. The limitations of mobile VoIP provided over 3G technology, a regulatory environment favourable to its restriction and the immaturity of mobile VoIP business models all limit the current threat to mobile operators.
The rollout of LTE networks will change that, removing the limitations and leading to increased competition to traditional mobile voice services from VoIP. LTE will also change regulatory attitudes to OTT providers and their relationship with mobile operators. The Wireless Profit paper, 'Monetising Mobile VoIP' discusses the emerging competition from mobile VoIP, its threat to incumbent mobile operators but, most importantly, the opportunities it presents.
This report assesses the growth of and level of threat to MNOs from VoIP. It goes on to discuss how MNOs can exploit the technology themselves to protect existing and generate new revenues.
