Uber and Airbnb have disrupted long-standing business models in the transport and accommodation industries by enabling access without owning underlying assets.  Not only do the new practices eliminate investment in assets, they also bypass many regulatory and taxation burdens that apply in the traditional models, leaving traditional incumbents on an uneven playing field.  In many ways these practices are analogous with those of OTT communication providers who are disrupting traditional MNO business without playing by the old rules.  MNOs should examine technology-led disruptions in other industries to identify potential implications for their own.
