Context

According to Gartner the definition of a platform is:

“… a product that serves or enables other products or services. Platforms (in the context of digital business) exist at many levels. They range from high-level platforms that enable a platform business model to low-level platforms that provide a collection of business and/or technology capabilities that other products or services consume to deliver their own business capabilities.”

A platform business model builds an ecosystem using an environment comprising APIs and rules of engagement for participants. High energy commercial expansion is increasingly shifting towards the ecosystems built on digital platforms.

For providers of digital platforms, the right environment to develop a vibrant and sustainable community within the ecosystem is critical for long term viability and relevance.

For investors, start-ups and established players, platform choice is also critical. The wrong platform will limit returns, but the right one(s) facilitate growth, profits and investment returns.

Diversity of players, and minimal friction to enter and work within the ecosystem are vital. Optimal freedom for players, and facilitation (rather than control) from the platform provider, will enable more innovation and energy, which will benefit all stakeholders.
