Online video streaming services and the proliferation of internet connected devices mean customers are no longer tied to the network infrastructure of their TV provider. The pay-TV industry is seeing its customers cutting their cable pay-TV subscription and going elsewhere while a growing number of younger Millennial customers are opting out of pay-TV subscriptions altogether. This younger Millennial audience is set to never subscribe to traditional pay-TV, but instead will opt for free web content, sponsored content and/or low cost skinny bundles.

The mobile operator's network is most often the first platform where Millennials begin consuming content such as video and music. This realisation by the TV industry is opening up new partnership opportunities for mobile operators in distribution and in content service delivery.
